Approaches to Learning in the 21st Century Classroom FULL
Limited Capacity full

As the 21st Century unfolds data suggests that young people will have as many as 3-5 different types of careers in their lifetime. Increasingly, employers and universities are suggesting that students need a wider range of skills, which they have the ability to use in a variety of situations. So how can schools respond to these requirements?

With reference to learning in 1972 Alec Peterson said that: ‘….what matters is not the absorption and regurgitation either of facts or of predigested interpretations of facts, but the development of powers of the mind or ways of thinking which can be applied to new situations and new presentations of facts as they arise.’ More recently in 2013, Lance King has spoken about the need for a ‘learning skills capability programme’ as being an essential part of school pedagogy and structures.

This session will examine the nature of the Approaches to Learning paradigm that is transforming teacher understanding and student achievement within the classroom. We will examine ‘What makes a good learner?’ ‘What understandings, skills and techniques do teachers need in the modern classroom?’ and consider ways in which you can move your schools to one that develops ‘autonomous learners’ with the persistence to tackle obstacles, using habits of mind and study, practised across a broad range of circumstances rather than on a narrow range of occasions.
